What Is a Pulley?
Even though pulleys come in many shapes and forms, the basic goal is the same: they can help you reduce the amount of force required to help you lift a load. If you have to lift a heavy box off the ground, you might be able to put your arms underneath it, but you will have a difficult time picking that box up against the force of gravity.
Instead of having to essentially push the item off the ground, it would be more efficient for you to pull it. So, you may want to tie a rope to the box, loop it around a wheel, and pull it off the ground instead. That is the entire goal of a pulley. There are lots of parts that need to work together to create an efficient pulley.
What Parts Make Up a Pulley?
Advanced pulleys consist of many parts, but there are a few commonalities among all types. Some of the most important parts of a pulley include:
- Wheel: There needs to be a wheel that redirects the force. Typically, the wheel has a groove in it that keeps the rope or wire in place.
- Line: There has to be a line that goes over the wheel. Then, this line has to be tied to whatever object is being lifted. This could include a rope or a wire.
- Axle: A pulley also has to have an axle or shaft that goes through the wheel itself, that way, the wheel is stable.

There are many types of pulleys, each of which work in a different way. Some of these pulleys includes:
With this type of pulley, the system is attached to a fixed point in space. Then, the rope is attached to the object. The axle and wheel do not move when the pulley is used.
In contrast, a movable pulley can move when it is used. A rope is attached to a fixed point, but the other end of the rope is free to move. Then, the pulley moves with the object when you lift it.
A compound system typically consists of multiple pulleys that work together to make the force lighter. When using a compound pulley, you can also change the direction of the force.
